Why Winnow is a probiotic first

The particle binding is real. It is also not the reason to take it every day.

When people first hear what Winnow is built to do, the interesting part usually lands first. A supplement, taken with meals, made from bacterial strains selected in part for their ability to bind micro- and nanoplastic particles within the gut lumen. It is a real story, and it is the reason many people find us in the first place.

But if you stopped there, you would have the product backwards.

Winnow is a probiotic first. The particle-binding work is something these strains also do. It is not the reason to take a probiotic every day, and it is not the frame we want to lead with.

That distinction may sound like a small one. In this category, it is not.

The wellness aisle is full of products that pick a dramatic problem and promise a dramatic reversal. That posture has always felt off to us, and it feels especially off when the subject is plastic exposure — a slow, ambient, everyday thing that has been building for two generations. A one-week fix is the wrong shape of answer to a lifelong shape of problem. If the exposure is steady, the support has to be steady too.

Steady support has a name in nutrition science: foundational gut support. Probiotics are one way to provide it.

A probiotic is a live microorganism that, when taken in adequate amounts, provides a benefit to the person taking it [1]. A living contribution to the ecosystem inside you, chosen for what it does at the gut wall, in the mucus layer, alongside the microbes already there. The strains that have been studied most carefully in humans tend to support the barrier (the tight junctions between cells, the mucin layer over them, the inflammatory tone underneath) and they do it quietly, over time, without anyone feeling a dramatic shift on day three [2-4].

That is the register we designed Winnow to live in.

We chose the strains for gut-relevant behavior first: barrier support, compatibility with the existing microbial community, survival through the acid stretch of the stomach (a hurdle we have written about in Do probiotics survive stomach acid?), cohabitation. Every one of the strains in the blend has to earn its place on the fundamentals a good probiotic has always been asked to prove. If a strain could bind polystyrene beautifully in a beaker but fell apart on the way through the stomach, it would not be in the product. The binding is a bonus feature of a strain that first has to be a good daily citizen of the gut.

Then, on top of that foundation, we looked at binding.

The binding research is where the newer excitement lives, and it deserves the excitement. A 2025 screen of 784 bacterial strains found that select probiotics could adsorb polystyrene particles in vitro, increase fecal excretion of those particles in mice, and reduce residual intestinal particle load [5]. Other 2025 work with Lactobacillus plantarum pointed in the same direction — binding effects, more particles leaving in stool, some barrier repair, some effects on bile acid handling [6]. These are early studies. They are also real, and they line up with a broader body of in vitro and animal work suggesting some strains, at some doses, can interact with plastic particles at the gut surface [7-8]. So why lead with the probiotic, when the binding is the more novel headline?

Because the probiotic is the part you actually feel the benefit of every day, on a timescale a supplement can honestly claim. Because the binding, real as it is, is a gut-lumen event — a thing that happens to particles as they pass, not a promise about particles already elsewhere in the body. And because a product that leads with binding gets pulled, almost gravitationally, into the language of cleanses and detoxes. That language would flatter us in the short term and misrepresent us in the long term, and we would rather build the long thing.

The version of Winnow we are building is the one where you take a good probiotic every day, chosen for the gut, formulated for the modern exposure landscape, and honest about what the strains do and do not do.

If that sounds quieter than what you were expecting, that is intentional.

It is also, we think, the shape of a supplement worth taking for years.
