Who we are

Winnow Labs ("we", "us", "our") operates two websites:

• Winnow Journal (journal.winnowlabs.com) — our science blog
• Winnow Atlas (atlas.winnowlabs.com) — our microplastic research index

This policy explains what data we collect and how we use it across both sites.

What we collect

Account information (Atlas)

If you create an Atlas account, we collect your email address and display name. If you sign in with Google, we receive your name and email from Google — we do not access your contacts, calendar, or other Google data.

Usage data

We collect anonymous usage data including pages visited, search queries, and general device information (browser type, screen size). This helps us understand how our sites are used and where to improve.

Cookies

We use a small number of cookies:

• Session cookie — keeps you logged in during your visit
• Remember-me cookie (Atlas) — keeps you logged in between visits, if you choose
• Analytics cookie — anonymous usage tracking

We do not use third-party advertising cookies or trackers.

How we use your data

• To provide and maintain our services
• To communicate with you about your account or content you've interacted with
• To improve our sites based on usage patterns
• To send occasional updates if you've subscribed to our newsletter (you can unsubscribe at any time)

We do not sell your personal data to anyone.

Third-party services

We use a limited number of third-party services:

• Google OAuth — for optional sign-in (Atlas)
• Fly.io — hosting infrastructure

These services have their own privacy policies. We only share the minimum data necessary for them to function.

Data retention

We retain account data for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, we remove your personal data within 30 days. Anonymous usage data may be retained indefinitely in aggregate form.

Your rights

You can:

• Access the personal data we hold about you
• Request correction of inaccurate data
• Request deletion of your account and associated data
• Unsubscribe from communications at any time

Children

Our services are not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children.
