The tissues where published studies report finding microplastics, what those counts say at their real sample sizes, and where the evidence stops.

At the boundary

The way in

Three openings and one barrier. Everything measured inside a body arrived through the air or the mouth. The skin is the third boundary, and whether whole particles cross it has not been shown.

The breathing zone

1.7 to 16.2 particles per cubic metre of indoor air at breathing height

Vianello's team put a breathing mannequin in three Danish apartments and analysed what it drew in. Every sample carried microplastic, between 1.7 and 16.2 particles per cubic metre. Polyester was 81 percent of the synthetic fibres.

Breathed Strong evidence

What changes it. Most of a day is spent indoors, so the count at breathing height indoors describes exposure better than an outdoor reading does.

The nose and the swallow

About 60 percent of the mass deposited in the airway reaches the oesophagus within a day

Lazaridis and colleagues applied published air concentrations to a dosimetry model of the human respiratory tract. Inhaled particles settled mostly in the nose and throat. After one day the model put about 60 percent of the deposited mass into the oesophagus, 28 percent still in the airway and 0.4 percent into the bloodstream.

What changes it. Most of what is breathed in is swallowed rather than kept, which is why the two routes are hard to separate in any single measurement.

The mouth

Up to 637 microplastics released into saliva per gram of chewing gum

Lowe's team chewed five natural and five synthetic gums and counted what came off into saliva. Each gram released up to 637 microplastics, 94 percent of them in the first eight minutes. The median particle measured 45.4 micrometres.

What changes it. Plant-based gums released about as many as synthetic ones in this test, so the label is not a guide here.

The hands

1.85, then 4.2 particles counted on a child's hands, arriving and then leaving

Amiri and colleagues swabbed the hands and sampled the saliva of 100 children aged three to six across five kindergartens in Kerman. The average hand count rose from 1.85 particles on arrival to 4.2 on leaving. Most particles were under 100 micrometres.

What changes it. Hand to mouth is the route that matters most for small children, and a sink sits between the two.

The plate and the glass

39,000 to 52,000 particles a year from food alone, varying by age and sex

Cox and colleagues pooled 402 data points from 26 studies covering about 15 percent of the American diet. Their estimate was 39,000 to 52,000 particles a year from food, rising to between 74,000 and 121,000 once inhalation is added. The authors call these likely underestimates.

What changes it. The drink is the sharpest contrast in their own data. Meeting the daily water intake from bottles added about 90,000 particles a year, against about 4,000 from tap.

The skin

1.6 to 2.0 percent of one flame retardant came off the particle in a lab test standing in for skin contact

Abafe and colleagues ran a lab test, with no living skin involved, of what comes off microplastics carrying brominated flame retardants when they sit against a stand-in for the skin surface. Between 1.6 and 2.0 percent of the applied dose of one retardant came off in a form skin could take up. What came off in this test was the additive chemistry, not the particle.

What changes it. Cosmetic formulations on the skin changed how much came off the particle. That is a result in a dish, not a rule for a bathroom shelf.

What nobody has measured

Whether a whole particle crosses intact skin. The work so far measures the chemistry that comes off a particle, or uses cell models. Nobody has counted particles that made it through living skin.

Past the wall

The passage

Past the mouth the measurements change character. They stop being counts in air and become counts in tissue, in stool and in blood, from very small groups of people.

The colon wall

28.1 particles per gram of colon tissue, averaged across 11 surgical specimens

Ibrahim's team examined bowel tissue removed in surgery from 11 adults in northeastern Malaysia. Every specimen carried microplastic, an average of 28.1 particles per gram of tissue. Filaments were 96.1 percent of what they found.

What changes it. This is surgical tissue from people having bowel surgery, which is not a sample of the general population.

The stool sample

20 particles per 10 grams of stool, median across eight volunteers

Schwabl's team asked eight healthy volunteers in Europe and Asia to keep a food diary and collect one stool sample each. All eight samples carried microplastic, a median of 20 particles per 10 grams, sized 50 to 500 micrometres. Nine polymer types appeared, polypropylene and PET most often.

What changes it. Eight people, one sample each. The study was designed to show the particles are there, not how many there usually are.

The infant stool sample

36,000 nanograms of PET per gram of infant stool, against 2,600 in adults

Zhang and colleagues measured PET and polycarbonate in three first-stool (meconium) samples, six infant stool samples and ten adult samples from New York State. Every infant sample carried PET, a median of 36,000 nanograms per gram against 2,600 in adults. Estimated daily intake per kilogram of body weight ran about fourteen times higher in the infants.

What changes it. Six infants and ten adults is a small comparison, and the study measures two polymers rather than all of them.

The bloodstream

1.6 micrograms of plastic particles per millilitre of whole blood, mean across the donors

Leslie's team built a pyrolysis method for particles above 700 nanometres and applied it to whole blood from 22 healthy volunteers. The mean summed concentration was 1.6 micrograms per millilitre. PET, polyethylene and styrene polymers were the ones most often found.

Moderate evidence

What changes it. A 2025 reanalysis by another group showed how much the blood matrix distorts this measurement, cutting the PET quantification error by 38 percent with a different calibration. The figure is a first measurement, not a settled one.

The liver

6 of 11 liver samples carried detectable polymer, all six from patients with cirrhosis

Horvatits and colleagues analysed 17 tissue samples from 11 people in Germany with Nile red staining and Raman spectroscopy, down to 4 micrometres. The six cirrhotic livers carried polymer. The five livers without underlying disease, and the kidney and spleen samples, read negative at that limit of detection.

Emerging evidence

What changes it. A negative at one limit of detection is not an absence. This method sees particles from 4 to 30 micrometres and nothing smaller, and the study cannot say whether the particles had anything to do with the cirrhosis.

What nobody has measured

How much of what goes in comes back out. Intake has been estimated and stool has been counted, but never in the same people over the same period, so nobody can say what the balance is.

The lung

13 of 20 lung tissue samples taken at autopsy contained polymer

Amato-Lourenço's team examined lung tissue taken at autopsy. Thirty-three polymer particles and four fibres appeared across 13 of 20 samples. Every particle was under 5.5 micrometres, and polyethylene and polypropylene were the most common.

Breathed Moderate evidence

What changes it. Twenty samples from one city. The study reports what was present in the tissue and nothing about what it did there.

The placenta

12 fragments found in 4 of 6 placentas, each 5 to 10 micrometres across

Ragusa's team analysed six placentas from consenting women with normal pregnancies by Raman microspectroscopy. Twelve fragments appeared in four of them, on the fetal side, the maternal side and in the membranes. Three were pigmented polypropylene; the other nine were identifiable only by their pigments.

Moderate evidence

What changes it. Six placentas is a first look. A 2022 follow-up from the same group reported fragments inside cells, which sharpens the question of how they arrived.

Breast milk

26 of 34 breast milk samples contained microplastic, sized 2 to 12 micrometres

Ragusa's group analysed breast milk from 34 women in Rome by Raman microspectroscopy and found microplastic in 26 samples, the particles between 2 and 12 micrometres across. Polyethylene, PVC and polypropylene were the most abundant. No relationship appeared to the mothers' diet or personal care use.

Moderate evidence

What changes it. The authors read the absent dietary link as a sign that exposure is general rather than traceable to any one habit.

The testis

328 micrograms of polymer per gram of tissue, mean across 23 human testes

Hu's team ran pyrolysis gas chromatography on 23 human and 47 canine testes and quantified twelve polymer types. The human mean was 328.44 micrograms per gram, with wide variation between individuals. Polyethylene dominated in both species.

The frontal cortex

4,917 micrograms of polymer per gram, median across 24 decedent brain samples from 2024

Nihart and colleagues applied pyrolysis gas chromatography to kidney, liver and brain tissue from decedents in New Mexico. The median across 24 brain samples from 2024 was 4,917 micrograms per gram, against 3,345 for 28 samples from 2016. Polyethylene made up most of that mass.

Emerging evidence

What changes it. Pyrolysis weighs polymer mass rather than counting particles, and the paper carries a published author correction, linked below. The difference between the two years is the part the authors rest on.

Carotid plaque

150 of 257 carotid plaque specimens contained polyethylene, at 21.7 micrograms per milligram

Marfella's team analysed plaque taken out during carotid surgery from 257 patients and followed them for about 34 months. Polyethylene appeared in 150 specimens. It is the one study on this page that also reports an outcome. Over the follow-up, patients with polymer in their plaque had more heart attacks, strokes and deaths than patients without it.

Emerging evidence

What changes it. That outcome is an observational association in one surgical population and cannot show cause. Nothing in the study separates the polymer from the smoking, diet and blood pressure that travel with plaque. The published correspondence is linked below.

What nobody has measured

How any of these particles arrived, and whether they leave. No study has followed a particle from a route into a tissue, and no clearance rate for a human organ has been measured.
